Building Trades
Students in the Building Trades program receive classroom and real experience in residential construction, residential wiring, residential plumbing, cabinetmaking, and architectural design, energy efficient construction methods, computer assisted drafting (CAD), Computer Numerically Controlled (Robotics) Machining (CNC), and project management. Students work in both the RTCC shop as well as on numerous community building projects including all phases of building homes and additions. Students are prepared to enter two- or four-year college programs in such fields as architecture and construction management or enter apprenticeships and employment in the field.

- 1 embedded Math or Science credit.
- 1 English credit.
- 5 Program credits.

Program offerings include:
- Site planning, permits and codes
- Septic systems and wells; sewer/water hookups
- Foundations, framing, sheathing, roofing, int/ext finish, plumbing, heating, wiring, ventilation and cabinetry
- CAD (computer assisted design) All houses since 1988 have been designed on CAD
- CNC machining (computer numerically controlled). Many products are machined by a production router that cuts what is drawn in CAD programs
- Classroom course work related to all construction activities
- A complete commercial woodworking shop with training in use and maintenance as well
- Cooperative education opportunities: students may work second semester and/or second year for qualified construction contractors while receiving high school credit
- Apprenticeship opportunities: qualifying students may receive up to 600 hours credit toward electrical apprenticeships
- Studies based on individual student interests
- Introduction to regional contractors and manufacturers
The RTCC Building Trades program focuses on affordable, efficient housing technology and boasts Vermont Utility Company awards for housing construction.
